The successful candidate will join CommScope’s Connectivity Solutions business unit as a Cable Materials Engineer in the Materials Advanced Engineering team and will be located in Claremont, NC. He/she will participate in a range of materials focused activities from cable material specification, selection and validation to executing on engineering material evaluations in CCS’s Claremont Materials Test Lab.


  • Interact with product design engineers and product managers to develop material specifications based on product requirements.

  • Provide advice and consultation on material selection to product design engineers and advanced development teams.

  • Work closely with the manufacturing and purchasing organizations to execute on material substitution, replacement and cost reduction projects.

  • Coordinate and oversee validation testing of materials for a variety of broadband network applications and operating environments.

  • Execute extrusion trials in concert with design engineers to prove out selected resins.

  • Read, interpret and apply relevant industry standards and test methodologies.

  • Review and prioritize testing requests from a variety of departments in keeping with business priorities.

  • Organize Materials Lab work flow to ensure timely completion of testing requests.

  • Provide technical interpretation, advice and consultation on analytical results to laboratory personnel.

  • Write, edit and review laboratory reports with analytical results and evidence based conclusions.

  • Write, edit and review laboratory procedures and test protocols in compliance with relevant industry standards.

  • Coordinate technical and operational aspects of material analysis with other CCS Materials Test Labs.


  • Bachelors degree in Materials Science or Chemical Engineering or related degree with 5+ years of experience or Masters degree in Materials Science or Chemical Engineering or related degree with 2 + years of experience with a focus on Polymers

  • 3+ years industrial experience with polymer resins required

  • Familiarity with polymer extrusion and other molding processes preferred

  • Familiarity with cable materials and cable industry standards preferred

  • Experience with operating and interpreting results from the following types of analytical equipment: Thermal (DSC, TGA, TMA, DMA), Spectroscopic (FTIR, X-ray, UV-Vis), Physical Testing (Universal Testing, Impact Testing, Texture Analyzer, Compression Set), Rheology (Melt Flow, Viscosity, Melt Rheometer), Accelerated Aging (UV, T/%RH controlled chambers, Corrosion Testing)

  • Experience using ISO, IEC, ASTM, GR Core, and other industrial standards for materials testing.

  • Must be proficient in MS Office

  • Domestic and international travel may be required

  • Must be independent, motivated, organized and resourceful with excellent communication and skills to work with maximum effectiveness within a team and across organizational boundaries
