General Summary:

The successful candidate will join CommScope’s Connectivity Solutions business unit as a Materials Engineer with supervisory responsibility of the Laboratory in the Materials Advanced Engineering group.

You will participate in a broad range of materials focused activities from resin specification, selection and validation to advanced material development projects as a team member. You will also manage and oversee the technical, administrative and supervisory operations of CCS’s Materials Test Lab in Kessel-lo, Belgium.

This position requires an experienced analyst to manage the lab’s evaluation of thermoplastics, metals, ceramics, adhesives and sealants. You will demonstrate an understanding of a variety of test equipment and methods along with resultant data interpretation and analysis.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Interact with product design engineers and product managers to develop material specifications based on product requirements;

  • Work closely with the manufacturing and purchasing organizations to execute on material substitution, replacement and cost reduction projects;

  • Coordinate and oversee validation testing of materials for a variety of broadband network applications and operating environments;

  • Develop advanced materials for strategic technology platforms;

  • Provide advice and consultation on material selection to product design engineers and advanced development teams;

  • Execute molding trials in concert with design engineers to prove out selected resins;

  • Read, interpret and apply relevant industry standards and test methodologies;

  • Domestic and international travel may be required;

  • Review and prioritize testing requests from a variety of departments in keeping with business priorities;

  • Organize Materials Lab work flow to ensure timely completion of testing requests;

  • Provide technical interpretation, advice and consultation on analytical results to laboratory personnel;

  • Write, edit and review laboratory reports with analytical results and evidence based conclusions;

  • Monitor the effectiveness of laboratory operations and staff and identify needed modifications for continuous improvement efforts;

  • Read, interpret and apply relevant industry standards and test methodologies;

  • Write, edit and review laboratory procedures and test protocols in compliance with relevant industry standards;

  • Coordinate technical and operational aspects of material analysis with other CCS Materials Test Labs.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Ph.D., Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Chemical or Polymer Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or similar technical background and /or equivalent experience with a minimum 1 to 2 years’ focused experience on Polymers;

  • Polymer melt processing experience such as injection molding, extrusion and other molding processes;

  • Familiarity with adhesive, rubbers and sealing materials a plus;

  • At least 6 months supervisory experience over staff with responsibility for reviewing and approving lab reports;

  • Experience with operating and interpreting results from the following types of analytical equipment: Thermal (DSC, TGA, TMA, DMA), Spectroscopic (FTIR, X-ray, UV-Vis), Physical Testing (Universal Testing, Impact Testing, Texture Analyzer, Compression Set), Rheology (Melt Flow, Viscosity, Melt Rheometer), Accelerated Aging (UV, T/%RH controlled chambers, Corrosion Testing);

  • Experience using ISO, IEC, ASTM, GR Core, and other industrial standards for materials testing;

  • Must be proficient in MS Office;
